SHIPPING NEWS.

"Admiral's Tribute to Mercantile Merine,

Rear-Admiral Sir AN Henniker-Hughan. Superintend- ent of Dockyard, speaking at a luncheon given by Sir John Jackson. M.P. recently, to mem- bers of the Devonport Mercantile Association, said that his war connection with the Navy had been in the Grand Fleet.” He had served. for 20 months in command of one of the ships, and during that time there had beez only certain occasions, fow and far between, when the Navy had had an opportunity of coming to the front. Nevertheless, it had been doing vital work. Apsit from its importance, that work was tirerome and often dreary and monotonous. The destroyars were always doing hard and | dangerous work, and as to the trawlera and minesweepers, the people, should take off their hats tɔ those who manned them. · No one among the general public knew how valuable were their services to the nation; The Navy. was proud of the Mercantile Marine. They know and respected it before the war, and since the war began their respect for it. had increased a hundredföld.” No tribute was too high to pay to that service, which was con- stantly exposed to the dangers ‚of submarines and mines, but

encountered and overcome with.... courage and skill the great difficulties in navigation imposed. upon them by the war conditions.

Tribute to th: Merchant Service.

Where it is a case of sending. it out to so many thousands. of members, the despatch of the new issue of the “Guild Gazette" to each of them is a task which necessarily occupies some time, apart altogether from the labour and expense incurred, says the "Journal of Commerce." The postage alone means sever.1 hundred pounds. However, when it does reach the hands of the individual members it will not only be indicative to them of the strenuous work in which, the Guild has been engaged, but in showing how much success has bern achieved will stimulate their interest in the society to which they belong, and in the necessity. ⠀ of still further promoting unity and cohesion throughout the Those who have profession. already received their "Gazette" have expressed their keen interest . in its contents, and our contem- « porary,

"The Shipping World," in commenting on it, remarks as follows: "Members of the Im- perial Merchant Service Guid must feel a sense of pride in peru-ing the current number of the "Guild Gazette,” which gives such a detailed account of the
