Cost of Old Age Pensions. The number of old age peu. sioners on March 31 last was 343,690 men and 604,000 womsa. The cost in 1916-17 was $12,195,- 216 and the estimated cost of administration: $196,603. The cost of additional allowances in 1916 17 was £1,609,356. There were 143,050 claims to old age in pensions 1918 17, of which 30,015 were refused. Daring the year. 118,730 pensioners died.

Brave Young. Lady of Bath.

The identity of the brave young. lady who-recently performed the wonderful set of courage by leap ing into the deep canal look at Bath and rescuing Jack Catting, schoolboy, from drowning, has been revealed. She is Miss Joyou Brooke, aged 16, a pupil at Cheltenham Ladies' Colleg", and

A Great Soldier.

The Mayor of Northampton has” opened a fund for a memorial to the late Lizat, Col, Edgar Mobbe, the great international footballer, who had been one of the onistand- ing figures of the last three years. The Nursery School Miss Margaret Macmillan, speaking at Bedford College re- cently, said that she hoped to see an entirely new order of public servant, the nurse teacher pr teacher-nurse, who would take charge of the nation's children until the age of 7 and would thea hand them over to the elementary school. They would begin at the elementary school almost where they used to leave of. There would be one million children to deal with, and that would seguire over 100,000 gitle, teschere, and nurses.
