GERMAN DYES.

The Kaiser and Patents,

From an American official who left Berlin just before the rupture ofdiplomatic relations, I learn that Germany is more concerned about the inviolability of her patents in the United States than she is even about the possible seizure of libe ships, says a correspondent in an American paper.

The whole fature of the Crar man chemical industry and the prodnation of dyestuff---in which the Germans had gained a mon- opoly is involved in this question. German manufacturers, I am told, are alarmed at the efforts the Unit ed States are making to supply their own dyes and other chemical products, and at the decimon of the Washington Government to impose a 100 per cent duty on imports of these articles. Once the German patent rights were cons fiscated the whole of her chemical trade with America would ́ba rained beyond. recovery, and this logs of the marketa of the two" greatest textile manufacturing Countries-Britain and the United States--would be one of the

greatest disasters the war would have brought. My informant farther stated that questions relating to patent rights had been for years before the

∙War & source of friction between Berlin and Washington, The Gerwsze, he said, had'. always been ready to infringe with impacity American right, but load in their protests if there was the least suspicion of the violation of any Gərman right. The Kaiser himself bad laid himself open to suspicion', in proof of which the following story, long current in American buaïnese circles, was told:

When Edison visited Europe in 1889, at the time he was par- fecting the phonograph, he was received by the Kaiser, who ex tracted a promise that the scientist would send him a model of the wonderful machine. This wa done,

and before many months phonographs of s.sort- were being made in Germany without regard to patent rights.

When Edison's next invention was completed the German Am- bassador in Washington made an application for another model on. the Emperor's behalf, but on this foccasion he was told bluntly that *** the young man" could not be

obliged.
