Bangkok European's Death. Tae Bangkok Times records the death of Mr. James Duncan Macarthur, M. I. E. 8. M. L.M. E, which took place at Cranleigh Sanningdale, Berks, on March 24. He was 45 years of age. Mr. Macarthur was at one time a partner in the firm of Macker and Macarthur in Bangkok. Later he set up a business for | himself as an engineer and con- tractor and for a short time he ran the Wat Lab slipways. He took an active part in the forma tion of the lodge of Freemasonry st Bangkok and was the first Master of Lodge St. John 1072.

A New Sumatra Coal Field,

Reporta from Palembang state that coal has been found at Boekit Assum. The cos! found bere has been thoroughly tested by the East Indies Naval Squadron and found to be of exceptionally good quality, in fact better than soy yet found in the Indies. Some 1,000 tons of the coal have recently, been ins ported by the sailing vessel Nest and it is the intention of the local gas works to tear it again. ́s preliminary test his abown the quality to be satisfactory. The valas of the Boekit Assem coal, Hays the Nw. Soer. Crt, is almost equal to that of the well-knoWD Cardiff coal. It is understood that a company will be formed abortly Lo undertaké further exploitation of the fields which, it îe antici- pated, will within a few years show a large output.
