The directors of the British American Tobacco Co. in Febru- ary, says & London exchange, issued a letter to the shareholders atating that they are unable to preceed with the proposal. to make a bonus distribution of one $5 Ordinary, share of. the Im-- perial Tobacco Company of Canada in rospect of every four Ordinary shares held. The directors approached the Trea- sury on the question of the dis- tribution and asked whether per mission would be granted, and a reply has been received saying that the distribution would not be permissible without the con sent of the Lords of the Treasury. and that they were not at the moment in a position to say whether the shares in question were likely to be required by them under the Defense of the Realm Securities Regulations, and they feared therefore that they would not be justified in
enable the company to effect the proposed distribution at the pre- sent time. Should the company, however, desire to make the dis- ribution at a later date they will give the matter renewed consi- deration if a further application is made to them in, say, three months' time.

The Sugar Industry in Australia. devoted a long article to the The "Melbourne Age," recently
development of beet sugar grow- ing in Victoria, an industry which was undertaken under Government auspices a few years ago. The acreage under best has advanced from 458 in 1910-11 to | 1,200 in 1915–15, and the product- ion over the same period from under 6,000 tons to 14,400 tons. Government undertook
establishment of beet farming and manufacture. High prices have, however, lately given big profits to farmers, and as the land and climate of Victoria are said to be particularly suitable for beet cultivation, the industry has the prospect of a very considerable extension, more particularly as a
