A Tangku Tragedy,

The Peking and Tientsin Times of the 12th instant says:—The death took place under the most distressing circumstanoss Tangku yesterday of Misa Amalia (Millie) Gertrade Morton, daugh- ter of Captain: T. 8. Morton, of Butters-ld and Swire. Miss Mor- ton, who was but 22 years of age, was to have been married at All Saints' Church, Tientsin, to-mor- row to Mr. Dadley V. Wano- str:oht, of Shanghai, who camÀS up here from Shanghai on Friday, and that same night felt unwell. Babsequently it was discovered that he was offering from scarlet fever, and this his facose also Dontracted. Shanghai's Troubles.

The Shanghai Captain Superi ntendent of Police în his month- ly report atates:-" The political sitastion at the present moment Traught with considerable dangers. As pointed out in the previous police reports a large number of men, who are nothing more nor less than robels, were brought to Shinghsi for the par- pose of constituting some sort of army when the occasion offered. ▲ very conservative estimate gives their number in the Settle- ment as 5,000, though there are probably more than twice this number in Shanghai and its vicinity. These men are under no proper leader, and recently have not been paid their nukk wages with the result that a large proportion are potential robbers. Unless something is done to deal with this problem by repatriatión or, some other scheme by those who were responsible for bring ing them to Shanghai (and they sra mon now in high positions). a vary sociona situstion may have, to be loved In the near future."
