Huge Fortified Zone Captured.

Angust 13, 1:45 pm. Beater's correspondent at Rome says that the Italiaos bare captured the entire fortified zone from Usred to the west of Vallon PA. This is semi-oficially described an being of equal importance to the fall of Gorizia, as both positions were pivots of the Austrian Isonzo defence sad the whole of the Oarso zɔne was transformed by a year's work into a vast and formidable radaubt. Trenches were sank deep in the rocks, armour-plated, and defended by entanglemente and minefields, and connected by an immense system of commanic- ation trenches. Big Haul of Prisoners.

August 13, 7.20 p.m. According to Reater's correspondent at Rome, it is officially stated that strongly defended positions in the Carso area have been -carried; 1,585 prisoners and some guns have been captured.

Sines the 6th inst., 15,393 prisoners have been taken, inolading 350 officers, 16 gane, a number of machine gaus and a quantity of war material,

Turks Driven Back.

August 13, 3.30 p.m. General Murray raporta:-Our cavalry has driven back thef Turks east of Biraal Mans, and the pursuit continues. We secured no materials or stores, but large heaps of ashes were found at Bir-el-Abd.

August 13, 9.15 p.m.

Beater's correspondent at Cairo ststen that the situation at Sinai has been most satisfactory since the 4th-inst. The Turks General Sir Douglas Esig in communique states:North-have been driven out of their positions and purened for fifty miles west of B:zentia Le Petit the British gained ground towards from the Bar Canal. British Guns Scatter Enemy.

August 14, 1.50 1.1. Gemaral Sir Douglas Haig, in a commanique, sikten ;-ÁN memy bomb attack to the south-east of Guillemont was repulsed.

The total enemy losses recently are estimated at 7,000, of which 3,534 have been taken prisoners. Four guns and a buge quantity of war material have alsɔ been captured.

ANOTHER EAST AFRICAN SUCCESS.

August 13, 10.55 p.m. According to an official announcement, General Smuts and various forces commenced, simultaneously, on the 5th inst., a forward movement against the main enemy force, which, ainos its defeat on Jana 24 on the Lakigara River, has occupied strong positions on a fertile and well-waterod tract on the Noura Mountains, Stubborn actions developed, resulting in the defeat of the enemy at Matamondo and Techango, whence he had been par- sued. The enemy's losses were relatively severe, but ours were smali.

It is officially announced that two hostile seaplanes flew over Dover at noon. Four bombs were dropped but di no material damage. Anti-aircraft guns bombarded and fero- planes pursued the raiders, who made off seawards. One officer and six men were wounded.

August 12, 2.50 p.m. General Sir Douglas Haig in 'öömmunnique says that 40 szemy attempt to re-capture the trenches north of Pozieres 'was repulsed with heavy Jose.

Augest 12, 300 p.m. The text of the communique from General Sir Douglas Haig isThe enemy made zenewed efforts to re-capture the trenches lately" "wrested from him on the bigh ground north of Pozi- eres, by delivering & strong infantry attack last ́evening, supported by heavy artillery. This was repulsed with heavy enemy loss. He succeeded nowhere in piercing our positiens. Elsewhere there is no change.

French Still Advancing.

· August 12, 4.30 p.m.

A Paris communique sayı: We have organised a new front north of the Somme. A vigorous German attack on the quarry north of Hem wood, captured by us yesterday, was driven back by a curtain of âre. We advanced south of the Thiaumont work. Two enemy attacks at Fleury were entirely repulsed. Our reconnaissances penetrated Hom wood and the cast station at Hem, where they discovered was repulsed with losses. An enemy attack at La Maisonette a great many German corpses.

Big Captures by the French.

August 12, 1.60 s.m..

A Paris communique reports: The French north of the Somme attacked the third German position from east of Hardecourt to the Somme opposita Buscourt. They captured all the trenches and fortified works on a front of 6 kilo- metres, to a depth of from six hundred to a thousand metres, and took a thousand prisoners and thirty machine guns.

The French captured the southern part of the village of Maurepas and the cemetery.: A Gemman counter-attack between Maurepas and Clery broke down under fire, The French executed uumerous lestructive bombardments south of the Somine. There was an intense artillery fuel east of Verdun.

A British Report.

August 13, 1.50 a.m. General Sir Douglas Haig, in a communique, says: Be-` tween the Ancre and the Somme the situation is unchanged. South-east of Ypres the enemy attempted to leave his trenches to attack, but the attempt was defeated.

August 12, 8.30 p.m. Reuter's correspondent at Petrograd says the Russians are pressing onward in Galicia and are following the enemy, who are abandoning prepared positions, across the rivers Bowing into the Dniester and Stanislau undamaged, Obatiu- ale fighting continues to the north of Bitlis.

Russians Occupy Important Town.

August 12, 11.30 p.m. Reuter's correspondent at Petrograd says the Russians have occupied the important town of Nadworna, twenty miles south-west of Stanislau.

The Culmination of Seven Week's Effort.

August 13, 1.50 u.m.

A Petrograd communique says: The seven weeks' efforts of Generals Steherbatchioff and Sakharoff, under the direc tion of General Brusiloff, culminated to-day in the capture of six fortified villages and woods, the whole line on the River Strypa and the encary's winter base on the Tarnopol Buczacz front, the whole constituting the last sector of the fortified enemy rampart from Fripet to the Rumanian front- ier.
