At far back sa May last, says the Jantay namber of Eastern Engineering, particulars appeared “in this Journal of pleat then just reaching completion in the Rugby shops of the British Thomsca- Bosston Company constructed for the Chins Light and Power Com- pany of Hongkong, and the Hong- kong and Whampra Docke. We are now ena led to give further details and to illustrere the gen arating plan and switchboard ero- ployed in the Chins Light and Power Company's new installa- tion. The existing power station of the company is situated at Kowloon, and contains gas engine

driven generators operating on anction gaa. The necessity for increasing the output of the station

cope with the growing demand for electricity

for

power and lighting purposes in Hongkong led the managers of the company, Messrs. Shewan, Tomes and Co., to consider the type of prime mover most suitable for driving the new generatore. After careially considering the relative merits of gas engine and steam tarbice driven generatore, the company, in conjunction with .their con-alting engineer, Mr. Conrad Mendham, decided in favour of turbo generators. Coa- | tracts were, accordingly entered int with the British Thomson-) Houston Company, L:d. of Buzby, for the sopply of the tarbo generating plant and control switch-gear, and with Messrs, Babcock and Wilcox for the boiler plant.

day. par The contrast between then and now in the matter of abells affords matter for the heartiest congratulations to our Affies. The ̈ recuperative power of Russia is displayed equally in her magui- ficent armies assembled on the Austro-German fronts, and in the calma determination of the men AS well as the leaders to conquer or to die. The stirring address of | the - Generalistimo announcing that be world fight on till victory www woo, fell on responsive sera. When the Germans botated that they had broken the military ¡ower of Rassis, they were merely trying to gt neutrals. Their own generals knew well enough that they had met their match in General Alexief, whose 30- cessful retirement from Vilna will over remsin an example of fine generalship; but when the Ger- mans farther declared that the Ru sian Army would remain in- active at least for six mon:be, they evidently deceived them- FEBRUARY RAINFALLelves, and this mistake ia bely
