tonnage requires it, the outpat

can be increased from 15 to 60 per cent within the year, accord- ing to a canTSA made by the Chamber of Commerce of New York. Some of the shipbuilders, although against expansion of their yards, said that the outpat from the present ways could be considerably increased over the normal by the process of doubl ing up on the work. Shipbuilding is particularly active along the Atlantis Coast where there have been heavy bookings of orders in

the

past few months. Many of these yards build only merchant bottoms, but others divide their wark between private and Gor- smmment contracts. One concers which had but one merchant ship on the ways July 1 is now at work apon sixteen vessels. An officer of this company said that the ton- nage of ocean-going merchant vessels being built in this country for American registry has increas ed 1,000 per cent in the past six months.

tons; the anexported (about 6,484,000 tons) was used by railways, mines, and industrial works, for domestic purposes, or for stock at the' place of produc- tion. What decreases there were in the production of individual mines within the Union occurred in the last four months of the -year directly in consequenos of circumstances created by the war. Working costa have increased in recent years, due to rises in rates of wages, higher railway charges and to intressed prices of suppl. ies. In the Transvaal there were, at the commencement of the year 1914, 23 coal companies produc ing, of which four are in the Springs Brakpan area, 14 in the Middleburg area, and five in other districts; these companies hare a total issued expital of #3,558,100, os which dividends amounting to £285,200 were paid în 1913. In the Cape there were, at the same time, two companies whose issued capital was £253,- 400, paying no dividend; and two in the Orange Free State (issued capital, £1,102,600), whose divi- dends amounted to a total of less than £6,000. The expansion of the bunkering trade at Union ports is of itself a sign of steady progress, and the importance of the Union as a place of call for bunkering parposes alone by ocean-going steamers is steadily increasing. There is no doubt that shortage of available railway. tracks prevented the bunkering trade being as great as it other wise might have been. In fact the railways can hardly keep pace with the demand for trucks, to and, on occasions in the middle of the year, business had for this russon to be refused by coal Com
