THE FIGHTING IN THE BALKANS.
HOW THE IRISH SAVED. THE DAY.
December 13, 2.30 pm. Continuing his account of the operations in Macedonia, Beater' special correspondent says 2***Yesterday week the Bulgaria pressare became stronger. Their forces had rapidly increased from two to four Divisions with Cavalry Corps These began to bear most heavily ca a point at the junction of the French and British lines, especially threatening the Strumnites road forming the main artery of our position.
Their first onslaught was not pressed vigorously and was easily repulsed, but, with his constantly increasing strength, the enemy soon began to make things hot for our first line, opening a murder ous artillery fre at close range.. Exposed to this hot gruelling and threatened partly on the flank, owing to the French retirement, our position became untenable. Therefore, the men of the Irish Divis ion were withdrawn to the second line, which had been prepared s long time in advance.
<s
In the course of these engagements, the fighting was often hand-to-hand, bat the Irishmen proved themselves better man
than the Balgare, even with the latter's own favourite weapon, the barcne. They repeatedly drove off the enemy, who was heavily panished.

THE CHARGE AGAINST
A GUNNER.
The importance of our stand is difficult to exaggerate, becasse, bid the Balgarians succeeded in pushing through, they would have cut off the retreat of the Anglo-Franch main body. The splendid tenacity of the Irish Division defested the enemy's hopes and gave the Anglo-French Command ample time to prossed with THIS EVENING'S PARADE hotel who brought the defendant the withdrawal.
