According to oflcial returan the output of coal in Japan from January up to the end of October last amounted to 6,700,000 tons, of which 1,012,500 tons have been exported abroad, 3,900,000 tons distributed to various parts of the country. 200,000 tons supplied to foreign ships and 970,000 tons to Japanese vessels.

From Coal to OIL

Two big stoomships, the Kroon- land and the finland, are to be converted from coal barners to oil burners. This will be a high- ly profitable change 61800 being the expected saving on fael and $700 on wages of fremen on each round trip of each ship. In ad. dition, the removal of coal bunk. ers will permit the carrying of 1,500 additional tons of cargo, at a profit of £5,000 a ship for sach | trip at present freight rates.
