The efforts to dispose of the Haiatai, which, foundered in the Astra Channel during a squall having failed, further attempts were made to dispose of her pri vately without success. It is thought that the bond of Tis, 2,000 which the puroseer was required to put up to remove the wreak within three month has deterred bidders and the wreck will ultimately have to be re- moved by explosives.
Merchant Tonnago on the Clyde,
The output of merchant toc. ange on the Clyde during August bad been very satisfactory, taking into consideration the fact that comparatively few of the ship- yards on the river are exclusively engaged on mercantile work, The total amounts to well over 20,000 tons. Very few naw orders have been
reported since the beginning of the year, and up till September 10 not a single contract had besa announced for a period of nearly two months. It is now stated, however, that two firme have booked orders for fairly large oil tank steamera.
