FRIDAY, 22nd Oct.
October 13, 6,45 s.m. Reuter's correspondent at Petrograd says the victory on the Stryps was the result of hard fighting and bold Russian onslaughte. The centre was the Galician village of Haivoronka, west of Trem- bovlia. The Russians had the upper hand in the fighting on the 10th inst, and followed up the success on the 11th: Besides taking two lines of trenches they stormed a fort and a farm on a bill east! of the village. This work, according to a communique, consisted of an elaborate system of covered trenches connected by a corridor with armed loopholes and was surrounded by a double line of en- tanglements. The two hundred and fifty-two survivors of the gar- rison Barrendered with a gun and three maxima. Subsequently, the Russians, in a fresh effort, in the same district, forcad the enemy's lines on Mount Makova; where they captured a whole Aus- trien battalion. These successes led to a general disorderly retire- ment of the enemy on the whole sector. The Bassians closely Swatow. parening Patered Haivoronka over a barning bridge and crossed the Strypa. The same evening the Russian cavalry sabred the fleeing Austrians and captured a convoy.
