Increasing Our Products.

Many more men will hava to go!” This was the solemn warning. given by Lord Selborns, Minister | of Agriculture, when speaking on the situation in the House of Lords the other day. He is in a position to judge the gravity of the_isine, and the imperative needs of the hour. While the demand is still being made for men, more men, for the fighting line and we have no reason fo | doubt, the respouse, will be hearty from every part of the far-dang Empire it is gratifying to see what efforts are being mide to-day to obtain greater harvests from the land. We have been content- Jeå för a generation and more to allow much of the land to become fallow, sgrionlture bad little encouragement, the oitles attract- ed the men who had been reared in the country. Now that the ernel figures of war have clutched Great Britain, statesmen have advocated economy and princip. ally point to the reduction, if not the elimination, of those imports which should be produced on home soil.

Daily Press.

The Westera Provinces of Chian, And it is further suggested that | this împrovement of inland water- ways should supersede the pro- posed Yunnan-Changking rail. way, which, it is olaitoed,"would be the more expensive project. The cost of the railway is put at one million sterling; it is claimed that all the locks, dams, cuttings, and so forth, that would be needed to control these thousands cfmiles of untamed waters could be con-

structed for a less sum. The pro. position is too extravagant to be seriously discussed; ifÜhine wants to spend money on improving the upper waters of the Yangize, it would be far more to the point to tackle the Iohang-Chungking section than to waste a million on an attempt to make navigable for algumera a stream that one solit- ary European bas travelled down in a sampan. The railway echemo then holde the field'; with a rail- way from Yunoan to Suifa, par- sing through the rich Tung-chuon and Obsotung plains, and with steamer conrections from Saifu to Chuoghing and the other Yang- ize porte, much will have been achieved towards the opening op of corthern Yunnan. We may have to wait long time yet for the railway, but now that mer- cbant steamere have retobed Suifa, the first step Las been a0- complished.

China Vail, HT Our Monitors on the Belgian Coast,

An official notifostion This morning gives the lie to German statements regarding the particu lar British monitor operating off the Belgian coast. Suoli preos dars is becoming, if not even common place; at least not unusual,What is wasily more interesting is that the telegram goes: on to point out that the monitors now off the Belgian const are five now ships, and that, the utility of this simple but modern typs of naval oralt hás been one of the most interesting saval anrprises of the war. The monitore, it is added, have been particularly free from accident. When the use of monitore win first mentioned, some months ago, it was generally thought by the man-in-the-street to be an inter cating but not particularly-hope- ful experiment in the use of light-draught war craft. ⠀⠀ The construction of five new vessels, and the fact-officially stated that the former bosts are "DOWN operating at the Dardanelles and in the Indian Ocean, proves that they bave justified the experi ment. The factors, of sucgenii în this war--a war which like mIDER others is proving the confusion of prophets in their own and other countries--are ever growing in. number and variety.
