THE HONGKONG, TELEGRAPH, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1916,

The population of England and Wales is divided into two main groups, oconpied persons and unoccupied persone.

The following facts based upon census returns are compiled by Mr. Holt Schooling.

This means that of all males aged 10 years and upwarde 837 per 1,000 were occupied and 103 were unoccupied. Similarly, of all femalce aged 10 years and upwards, 310 per 1,000 were occupied and 684 were unoccupied, And of all persons aged 10 years and upwards, 508 por 1,000 were occupied and 434 were uncooupied,

The occupied group (434 per 1,000) is, of course, partly made up of children over 10 years of age and of women who though not engaged in trade, a business, or a profession are yet most usefully employed in their home duties,

The occupatione of males and females differ so widely that it is necessary to state the leading occupations for males and for females separately.

Occupied males represent 837 per 1,000 males aged 10 years and upwards and their leading occupations are as follow:
