A message finn Petrograd etates: The fight in the Baltic end-pire are suspended. ing in the stranding of a mine-laying oruiser of the Albatross oleva began at eight o'clock on the morning of the 1st inst. Fog was 80 dense that sometimes the opposing ships were swallowed up in the darkness. The Russian squadron, comprising the Rurik, Admiral Makaroff, Bogatyr, Bayan and Oleg, were returning from the America, ex Mongolia, Hakata Bl. Seb southern Baltic when they met and attacked a German light cruiser of the Augsburg alass (4,250 tons, 3rd olnos cruiser, 27 knots) and three destroyere. The Augsburg early in the action, fled under cover of the fog, while the destroyers belched forth smoke interposing a eartsin between the Russians and the Albatross, while they also fruitlessly tried to torpedo the Russians.

The Rassiona ceased fire when the Albatross entered Swedish Chefoo, waters and continued on their course.
Smoke from many funnels wrs sighted at ten o'clock and then Hoiboy the Ilcon (armoured cruiser, 9,350 tone) with the Augsburg and cebu & four destroyera came up and were attroked by the Russians. They fled southwards in half an hour. The submarines accompanying them unsuccessfully attacked the Russians.
The Rurik, which was in the rear, was ordered to atteck and engaged two craisers of the Roan and Bremen (3,200 tone, 3rd claes) olasses later. They had apparently, just arrived and the Augsburg, which was damaged in the previous action, kept at a respectful dia
tance.
The Roon's sight inch guns were successively silenced by the Rurik'a salvces and abe also tock fire.
The Gertaan then led and disappeared in fog pursued by the Rurik, which was again unsuccessfully sttacked by a submarine.
The enevalties of all the Roesian chips were only fourteen men 'wounded,
Approaching the Russian coast the squadron was joined by battleships and flotillas of destroyers, the latter repelling submarines which were most active and especially so against the Rurik.
