Japanese Government
Businesses.
There has been talk for a long time past of transferring some of the many industrial and commer- cial ventures of the Japanese Government to private enterprise, Boys. The Japan Chronicle.
Some of these were taken up in the first place by way of starting a new business in a line where private capitel did ros care to brea kground, and it was not in- tended to keep them on when once well established. But there is always cne great difficulty in gotting rid of each ventures, when they pay, the Government is very reluctant to part with the revenue that they bring in; when they do not pay, dapitalists are equally relt c'ant to take them It is stated that a real effort is going to be made to unburden the Government of come of its ven- tures at least, and a Committee has been appointed to inquire into and report upon the idea. Mr. Wakitsuki, Finance Minister, is president of this committee, which includes most of the Vice- Ministore, the Secretary of the -Cabinet, and the heade of the
Legislative Bureaux.

Morti. mer Reid, Audior. In moving the passing of the accounts, the Chairman called attention to the general progress of the Com; 30y, which, actwithstanding the de pression in business on account of the European war, showed an increase in income and interest' cartings and a decrease in er- penses. There had also been s substantial decrease in the total of claime paid during the rear under review, although the total at risk was greater.
