Another New Steamer for the Q.'S, K.
A new steamer named the Manila Maru, built for the Osaka Shosen Kaisha by the Mitsu Bishi Dookyard and Engine Works wWAN to have been launched on Sanday morning, saya the Kobe Herald of June 2, but at the last moment it was found necessary to postpone the ceremony until the 9th inst. No official explanation has been given of the hitch which caused the failure, rays the Nagasaki Press. At 8.30 everything was ready as usual bat the vessel re mained on the ways. Preasure was applied and eventually two tuge were employed, but without result, and at eleven o'clock. it was decided to abandon the attempt for the day. The guests who remained were taken to Akunonta and served with re- freshments. Mr. Shiota, the General Manager of the Dockyard, expressed regret at, the failure, especially as the President and the Superintendent of the Osaka- Shosen Kaisha, for whom the vessel is being built, and Dr. Mano, President of the Imperial Kiushu University, had come to Nagasaki to witness the ceremony, Mr. Hori, President of the 0.8.K, said that although the delay was regrettable it could have no affect on the steamer. Dr. Mano also gave utterance to some encoursg. ing sentiments. Dose Dr. Mano think that similar hitches have not marred latinoles in other parts of the world?
The above Steamers are fitted with Refrigerating Machinery, en- suring a plentiful supply of Ice, Fresh Provisions, etc., and are lighted throughout with Electricity: All State-Rooms have Electric Fane. A duly qualified Doctor and Stewardess are carried.

"New Submarines. Mr. Edison's Safety Battery,
It was announced in New York « recently that Mr. Edison bad per fected at his laboratory at Esat Orange, New Jersey, a new form of storage battery for submarines which will do away with the chief danger now existing in the opera- tion of underwater craft the danger of chlorine poisoning. The only metals in the new bat- teries will be niskel and steel, all lead being dispensed with, A solution puriâca the air of the sabmerged vessel, absorbing the carbonic acid gaa exhaled from the lungs. It would therefore by possible for a submarine s equipped to remain under water 100 days without danger of, as phyxiation to the crew. The new battery has been accepted by the United States Government, and will be installed in the now American aubmarine 18, now under construction at the Ports. month Navy Yard.-Reuter.

doubt had been expressed as to when the boat would be ready, and the supposed delay was attributed to her damage being extensive. As a matter of fact, Captain Garliok writes that the actual damage was not at all extensive, and the apparent delay is due to there being a big job on the vessel'e stem, a steel structure, which meant the casting of a pattern, annealing and some machine work. The stem has now been cast and is being annealed. There is every prospect of the steamer leaving Nagasaki before her due date, June 16, or 42 days from the time she went into dook. The Minnesota will then proceed to Kobe, possibly Shimidza, and Yokohama to pick up several thous gand tone of cargo awaiting her, en route to her home port.
