Armstrong Whitworth Report.

The report of Armstrong, Whitworth and Co, isacod (1) April 28, shows a disposable balance of £1,126,001, including £323,718" brought forward from last year. It is proposed to transfor £200,000 to "the general reserve and pay a dividend of 12.1/2 per cent. on the Ordinary! shares, which, together with £90,000 payable tho Pre- ference shares," will absorb £501,652, and to carry the balance forward.

Indian Yarn Trade in China,

the course of a speech made it the annual meeting of the Bom- bay Millowners' Amato, the Chairman, Mr. Narohem Morargi Goculdas made the following alatement with regard to the de- eline of the Indian yra trade with China:

4

To a very large extent it is the fault of the Indian mills that they are allowing Japanese yard to Bleal a marsh over their own. In- -dian yarn is very defective.com. pared to Japanese yarn in the quantity of reeling strength, or- derly bundling, packing and so

on.

"On the other hand, the Japanese are pulling forth every effort to diminish coat of product- ica so as to undersell Indian yarn, and at the same time to con- sult the tzate'and the sentiments of their numerone customers. If Indian millowners continue the laissez faire policy of the last few years, it is to be feared that a large portion of the Indian ex- port trade will be entirely gone. Unfortunately for our industry, no concerted action was taken sitheir to reduce the prolaction or to induce a quicker off-take with the result that, with colton again in the vicinity of 03. per Ib, & "bad" and somewhat irres- pansive market, and a huge stock of manufactured goods on hand, even the current year does not give more hopes of prosperity than did the year under review.

**Manchurla's Trade,

A British Consular report on Manchuria says that the quality of British articles is often un- necessarily high for the market. The fret essential is cheapness, and a lower grade of merchandise will, meet the requirements of the purchaser equally well. Com. mercial travellers who make a round of the retail establishments once or twice a year will find plenty of business. They should be pre- pared to unt up gco lsinsmall lote. The majority of Japanese shops appear to buy their gcode in салев such Japan. Ja eome

merchandiss may come from a bonded warehouse, but the terms of payment allowed by German merchants will often induce Japanese shopkeepers to buy. already goods, which have

Paid Japanero import duty, British manufacturers sending their goods to the Japanese mor- ket would be wise to have their trade marks" registered in Tokio. Generally speaking, most of the business at Tairen is done on a c.i.f. basis, the vendor drawing on the buyer at 90 days sight. Some business is done on a f.o.b. basis. Much business, however, is done! on <ther conditione,, principally cash against documents, which ie usually interpreted by the buyer se cash on receipt of goods,

Hokkaido Timber. The estimated empant of in port of Hokkaido timber to Manchuria this year is about 100,000 pieces of timber each of a foot square and 12 ft. in length, valued at about 1250,000 which is about half the total of last "year. The average annual importa from Hokkaido to Manchuria have yet rarely sunk below Y500,000. This estimated falling-cft is, we hear, rounded on the general business depression sequence of the War and also the comparatively large elock held over from last year. The timber season of this year was backward in its reopening by about a month owing to the belated advent of the thawing season. The timber season was introduced when the steamer freights were very stiff, Į and this and a few other con- siderations have made it impos- Bible to lower the raling price. Moreover, as the Sino-Japanese crisis, threatens to calminate in ruptare, the leading local timber dealers are oasting about for some means to get rid of their stocks. The first import consignment from Hokkaido this season took placa about the 10th instant
