The French Railways in War and Peace.
In 1875 a second law was pas sed, according to which the military working of the railways is divided into two sections-obe beyond the base and one in the Year of the baro. Under these ̈ ̈* conditions the companies can in war time only deal, and but to a limited extent, with ordinary passenger and goods traffic after the first four days, during which such traffic is entirely suspended, on the basis of arrangements decided upon in advance by the War Dapartment. Extra trains for ordinary traffic, mobilisa- titn" bas taken place, can only be added to the time” tablê upon an authorisation' tar that effect from War Department. When war i declared, the ordinary trains which bavestsited continue their journey to destina. fich unless' military requirements intervene; but as soon as their destination has been reached, they are emptied immediately and the carriages and wagons" are deɛ- patched to the military stations. Thus it will be seen that the French, like the British rauways have been of great nasist- ance to the State in the present great crisis.
