War Review.

The opinion prevails in Europe that Italy is about to enter the field. Colour is given to this belief by frequent anti-Austrian demonstratione and acta of violation of Italian territory by the hard-pressed soldiers of the Dual Monarchy. In England, in France and in Rassis all political parties are united in the desire to prosecute the war to the bitter end. No finer exemple: of this can be, cited than : M. Viviani's speech at an entertain- ment to wounded soldiers report- ed in Saturday's issue, or than to-day's telegram which states that the Unionist leaders are supporting the Government dur ing the present period of national peril, trusting the war will be prosecuted at whatever cost until complete victory is achieved for Great Britain and her allies, 60 as to secure the foundation of peace in Europe. An inflexibla spirit binds all parties on the side of the Allies, and whether the war is brought to an early con clusion cr is dragged on for years the result will be the seme-the complete annihilation of Prussian militerism and a long enduring: pesce, on a secure foundation, for. the world.

Daily Press.

The War.

Very significant is the fact that the allied armies have taken up' the attack so far with most en- ̈ couraging resulte. The enemy never expected such a crushing [defeat at the hands of the hated British sa they experienced at Neuve Chapelle, or as they auf-

fered at the hands of the French at Laa Eparges. This will give them an idea of what they must expect in the near future. Star- vation and constant exposure to Ardic weather, to say nothing of thaill-treatment moted out to them by their officere, is not conducive toGerman victory. Tae men are do ing all they can, though they now realise that it is useless. It is no lon ;er a secret that the power of Germany is relatively much less than it was last August. She has fought and is fighting still with amazing courage and stabbarn-' neas, but every battle means a losn that she cannot afford, and every light, even if it is won, makos ultimate victory impossible. Gorman resistance shows greater and greater signs of weakness, and this fact is not being over- looked by Germany's enemies. The wearing down" policy of General Joffre has proved to be the right one, and this policy is to be maintained to the bitter end.

China Mail.

The War Munition Problem. A writer in Engineering to band makes some important ob servations in the course of an interesting article on this subject. It may result, he says, that ad- ditional works will be atilised by the Government under their new cheme and that consequently there will be accoloration and in- crease in the volume of the production of war munitions. Bat the real oruz, as we have already said, is not the unreadi- ness of the employers to under- take war contracts in preference to existing peace contracts, but to get men to execute the work There is, in the first place, a shortage of man, owing to the extent of the transfer from the ranks of the manufacturers of war material to those of the user of war material at the front. Had there originally been such co-ordination Bs is now proposed under Govern- ment supervision, these men would never have been allowed to onlist in the fighting army Again, there is the difficulty of increasing the output of esch workor. At the beginning of the war, it was only one or two classes of workers who were inolitel to ocossional idle days, but later there has been an increase in the number of men absenting them- aelvesoccasionally from work, and tocrease in the extent of idle time.
