Commercia'
Chinese Cotton and Silver,
The American Commercial; Agent, Ralph M. Odell, writing from Shanghai on Nov 5, afates:
The cotton goods trade in China has been very so iously affected by the European War and because ita voluma is greater. than that of any other country in the world," with the single ex- ception of India, amounting in value to over $100,000,000.0 nually, the textile industry in manufacturing countries will undoubtedly suffer to a very large extent from the decline in. trade that has taken place in the past few months. The country has been more or less unsettled sives 1911, when the' first revolution began. In 1913 there was a gubatantial increase in im- peats, but owing to di turbances. in the interior, gcoda" purchased abroad were not distributed. Ir- ability to move the accumulated stroke has been intensified during the last few months because of a loss of a European market for native producte, and it must al ways be borne in mind that China's purchasing power depends very largely on its ability to sell.
The direct shipments to the European nations now at Wor amounted to $94,273,687 in 1013 out of toral exporte valued a $200,051,C63, and the direct purchases from the sume countries amounted to $125,332 337 out o total imports velued at $422,775,- 535. In addition, expats to and imports from Hongkong amounted to $80,850,902 and $121,241,377 respectively, and an a large part of this trade is actually with Earop, Hongkong merely being a port of tranabipment, it is safe to Lagume that more than half of China's Over-usa trade in 1913 was with the belligerent nations. The declius in silver and the consequenti rapid fall in exchange since the outbreak of the war would, in normal times, tend to stimulate exports and curtsil importa, but the demoralisation of fuancial and shipping facilities and the falling-off in the European de mand for Chir a'e' most valuable export, viz,, silk, tea, bidea bod skine, samum read, and bendS, bar, until very recently, resulted in an almost complete cessation of shipmente to markete that, formerly ab orbed a large part of the country's production. In Cora:quence of the less or restric-| tion of outlets for nativo anticler, the purchasing power of be Chinere has been seriously cur- tailed, while the rapid decline in exchange basincreased the difficul- lies of the situation. Prior to the war the value of the Shanghai taol was, in gold dollars, about $0.65, 98 compared with $0.53 fo-day (Nov, 5). In other words, an Article valued at $1 eculd be putolased for Tls. 1.52 in July of the present year, while the corresponding price in Novem ber is Tis. 187. Daring the same time the value of the Mexienn doll, which is the coin that is actually in use, has declined, in terms of tsole, from 73,3 to 71.85.. This, it is explained by the cotton piece-goods firm of Ilbert and Co., Shanghai, is due to the fact that the natives are getting! almost no morey against experi cargo that they have to sell, and the country outlets are sending down dollars from the interior for any purchases of import good. that they may require. Tho amount from any one place is not large, but the total receipta of these added to a stock of dollars in Shanghai that was already large, as compared with the amount of business passing, has depressed their prios. This meane that up-country carlets have to pay more for any purchases they. may make, and usturally this has a tendency to restrict their volume. When these interior points be come over-drained of actasl money the pendulam is likely to awing the other way; furthermore, the lower the dollar rate goes the moro likely is the up-country holder of produce to be able to diapose of his look at a price that must find a market for it.
