In con tinuance of their efforts in this direction the Guild have junt despatched the following latter to the Board of Trade-
Bir-Supplementing previous representations which we have made at the Board of Trade, both personally and otherwise on the matter of das compensation being granted to Captaine, Officers, and orewe generally of merchant ships in case of their losing their effects or being injured through opera- tions arising out of the War, or to their dependents in the case of their losing their lives from a similar cause, we are trusting. that the decision which the President stated in the House of Commons he would announce £98.30.hortly will be made before long and will prove to be favourable in every respect. As the Board of Trade of course recognise, the Crews of our merchant vesels are performing a work of vital im- portance to the issue before ibis country and its Allian, therefore we would submit that it is only a matter of squity that they should least receive similar consideration to the sufferers in the bombarded towns of Saarborough, Whitby

I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant, (signed) T. W. Moore: Secretary. New Steamers for Australlad Trade.
The long list of liners engaged in the Australian trade in likely to be further increased at an early date. It is reported that the Shaw Savill and Albion Company has placed orders for four new steam. ora, two of which are to be freight- ers, and two passenger liners. The contracte are said to have been lot with Meases. Workman, Clark, and Company, of Belfast, and Messrs. Alex. Stephen and Sons, of Govan. Each of the firms will build a passenger and a cargo. steamer. All of the vaurels will be right up to date, and the two destined for the passenger service will be large, high-class liners, Mesure. Dalgety and Company are the Sydney agents of the company.
The Shipbuliding Boom,' As an instance of the hunger for new tonnage, it may be mens tioned that s North-country ship- owner who asked for tenders for two shipa with a capacity of 7,000 tons could only find one firm of shipbuilders on the Clyde and the Tyne willing to consider his 'otder, and that he could not fir sa option for two further ships: to be built six months from 2/3 W. All the shipyards are working fall time, and this does not mein Admiralty ardere alone, for only the great yards can undertake work that requires such expori- ence, skill, and special equip. ment. Although balf our foreign ship-building trade is stopped, home orders have increased enormonsly in the last quarter of the year, and there have been strong complaints by shipowners that the captured German liners, which would have met their îm- mediate wants, had been with held from the market till the res cent sale.Manchester Guardian;
