The Emden's Trick, The resourcefulness of the Em- den in evading capture and in invading the port of Madras was most praiseworthy. Even the Times, which is alow to move in giving credit to the enemy, has acknowledged the courage of the Emden. I behaved very well," according to our London con- temporary, and no doubt the British naval authorities and the British mercantile marine have every reason to be thankful that: there are not many like her at liberty on the high seas. Un- fortunately, however, for the good name of the Emden, the Penang exploit does her no credit. Such
flag, in defiance of the well- trickery as the flying of an enemy defined laws of warfare between civilized nations, may prove to be the explanation of her immunity: if she is capable of flying a foreign flag, she is equally capable of deception of other kinds and now that eyes have been opened her adventurous career will doubtless bo speedily terminated.

BO completely surprised Emden's tor- pedosa that she was unable to fight them to any leot. Fipm the French account it appeare that the destroyer Mousquet made a gallant attempt to disable the Emden, but she shared the fate of the Jemohug. The Emden stopped to pick up the men from the destroyer and put out to sea with them on board as prisoners of war. Nothing is said in the cables as to the extent of the damage, if any, inflicted on the Emden by "the fire of her two vietime, but she has evidently succeeded once more in eluding the warships searching for her. There is one clear deduction to be drawn from the incident, and that is that the Emiden is kept well informed of the whereabouts of her pursuera. She went into the harbour of Penang for a very definite purpose and she accom- pliabed it. Some day we hope it will not be many days moro bafore some of the Emden's men are prisoners in our honde-He may. Le enlightened as to how this information has been reach- ing the German ship.

India's Rally to Great Britain.
Even the student community not always the most law-abid- ing are wholehearted in their offers of service. We have frequently quoted articles from English papers in India showing the fervour with which the Indians have rallied to Great Britain's assistance; and from India," the organ of the Indian National Congress we now find ample confirmation, Bays this organ:-"All indications make it olear that Indian opinion is- enthusiastic in support of the Imperial Government. From Calcutta we learn that remark- able expressions of loyalty bavo and deep regret is experienced appeared in many Indian papers,

They asked the Govern- ment to exempt Indian barristers from the operation of the Arms Act. Public meetings have been held in Calcutta, Bombay, and Karaobi, and attended by enormous browds, Rezolutions have been carried with prolong- THE GERMAN SPY SYSTEM IN
