The purpose of the trip, which was made on June 8, was to test the electric towing machines before they were used for the trip. of a ship through the entire canal. Four of these locomotives were used, two at the ship's bow, "one- on either side of the canal, and two at the stern in a similar posi tion. Getting the heavy line made feat to the stern of the ship from the far side, was the only difficulty which the officers re- parted, and they declared that this could be easily obviated.

At 8.42, the ship was towed out of the lock chamber; at 8.47 she cust of the towing engine's lines, and 4 minute afterward was going ahead under, her own steam into Gatun Lake to turn around for the return trip through the looks. The return trip, which was also MANILA LINE-Twin Screw Steamers "Chinhua.""Taming," accomplished without difficulties, and "Tean."
