transported experienced a large increase notwithstanding the prevalence of warlike conditions on important routes during the first half of the year. In the trado with India the import busi nees, owing to the favourable harveste in former years, was not anfavourably influenced by the deficiency in the wheat harvest in 1913. The service to Japan, Buffered from the pressure of the political situation in China, also assumed Daatisfactory course, while the Chinese service itself yielded approximately the same. profits as in the preceding year. Indo-China Steam Navigation Co. The meeting of the Indo-Chino Steam Navigation Company took place on 12th ult. Mr. H, Kos wick presided. The Chairman said he had to congratulate share. holders on an improvement in the income of the preceding year, notwithstanding the severe com petition experienced on the Cat- outta line from Japanese steamers. The net earnings of the steamers amounted to £115,197, and the
balance of $50,477. Out of that they had paid an interim dividend of 3 per cent, on the preferred shares, and proposed to pay the balance of the dividend in a few days, After that there would remain £35 570. They had decid- ed to pay a 5 per cent dividend on deferred shares and carry for ward £16,000. He was sorry to say that the opening months of 1914 had shown disappointing resulte compared with 1913. Advices from their general man agers told them that trade gener ally was poor, and that owing to the political unrest and financial stringency the native merchants were afraid to operate. The depredations of the so-called "White Wolf" prevented mor ohants sending their gils into the interior, and there was general feeling of lack of security and uncertainty. The recent unfortunate loss of the Empress of Ireland would fall very heavily upon the protection association of which they were members, and, naturally, they would have to. pay their share of any calls which might be made.
