LOG BOOK.
The First Wireless at Sea,
The size of the Year Book of Wireless Telegraphy, just published, is some indication in itself of the measure of the importance of its intereats, The list of shipping disasters in which "wireless" played a chief part in effecting rescues is already a Sailing date. long one. The first instance of the sort is given. In the early days of the Marconi system, when it was ridiculed by sceptics, tha lighthouse keeper of the Lizard received a message from a ship : fogbound at sea, stating that the captain thought he was near the Lizard, and if his message was received would they blow the foghorne, This was done, and shortly afterwards a big German liner, which had been making straight for the rocks, altered her course and proceeded up Channel. The captain, on arrival at South- the acknowledged ampton, response to his wireless by a letter to the lighthouse keeper. It is only thirteen years ago since the first wireless equipment installed on an ocean liner proved conclusively that the invention of Marconi had at once found an enormous scope of atility in the world's merchant service.

disappear, and State encourage- ment of their interests is among the recommendations. A soheme of technical odacation specially designed to meet the needs of these men is recommended, with appropriate supplementary courses in seaboard primary schools, continuation classes with practical instruction in marine motors, aetmending, and oc- casional lectures. The installa tion of motors in fishing vessele and co-operation are also recom- mended, assisted by national fands. The opinion is expressed that technical training will tend to arrest the decay of the seacoast population at the smaller stations and will also make the fisherman more alert to take advantage of any improvements in his oralt.

be some complications as to measurement, according to the place at which it is taken, and the relative proportions at that point of fresh and salt water. All except war vessels passing
through the Canal ure, however, it seems, to pay tolle based on their net tonnage. It is con- sidered in some quariere regret- table that with the opening of the Panama Canal opportunity should not taken to establish, in the measurement of vessels to pass through the waterway, some simple system which may be. easily determined.
Royal Mall Steam Packet. It was expected in some quarters that at the meeting of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company an important statement would be made as to a working agreement with other shipping interests, such as has besa talked of intermittently for a long time. The expectation appears to be based upon the important com- bination of German shipping interests, rently announced, which it is suggested calls for an answer by the English companies. We have information upon this point, but we should imagine. that those who bought stock on the idea will be die- appointed. It is cations, by the way how the old rumour of an arrangement with the Pen- insular and Oriental Company revives every now and then, It
