The Japanese Government on March 7 introduced into the House of Representatives Billa providing for a renewal of the subsidies to the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Osaka Shosen Kaisha and Toyo Kisan Kaisha, the term of ha present sabaidies expiring at he end of this year. that in view of the opening of tho Panama Canal' the 'Govern- ment intends to aħolish the sub- sidies to the Seattle and Tacoma lines, and in their place inaugu rate a New York line, for which
subsidy will be granted.
Compared with the amounts to be paid during the current fiscal vear the above proposals show decreases, in 1915-16, of Yen 1,011,000 for the European service, Yon 255,000 for the South American service, and Ten 159,- 000 for the Australian service, but an increase of Yon 319,000 for the North American service.
A new service to New York via
Panama is to be opened and it is said that the present Seattle line
will bo ortonded to New York for this purpose with an annual bounty of about 1,800,000 Yen in addition to the present subsidy to the Seattle line; and that the new serivice will be opened with eight 10,000-on stearers in the fiscal var 1916-16
