GUARD OF HONOUR.

The Japanese Vice Admiral Nawa made an official landing this aftetar on when a guard of honour and band'drawn from the D.C.L.I. were at Blake Pier to meet bim. He was met by Capt. Allison, side-de-camp to B. E. the Governor, and Capt. Edye, aide-de- camp to H.E. Major General Kelly, Salutes were fired and after the distinguished visitor had ine- proted the guard of honour, the party left for Government House.
WHITE WOLF AND OTHERS.
Excitement at Pachow.
Pochow, Anhui, Feb, 20, For some days after the capture of Liuanchow by White Wolf the tension here was great, but after hearing that he was rotrestine westward people became happier.
Now, however, the tufei from Yungcheng threaten to pay a visit to this the most important trading centre porth-west of Nanking for several hundred miles. Our Chin- ase teacher lives in Yungcheng and when he returned from his new year vacation he told us that matters were growing worse and worse over there. He said that three towns were robb d in sight of his villags while to was at home, nearly 100 animals being taken from one of them?
The chiel of one of these des- perate bands of two or three hundred, a man named Ma, per- suaded the local officials that if he were employed as a military official and his men taken over with him, he could crush the other bande very quickly. TheKaifong- fa officials, however, did not spprove. So Ma got. what he could out of Yangcheng and now, I suppose, will make a shot at Pocbow.
On Sunday, the 15th, the gates to the northern suburb, where nine-tenths of the business
done were closed. There had been fighting with robbers all Saturday and Sunday a few miles away from the city and the rob bera are said to have had the worst of it. But we bave yet to receive trustworthy news.-N. C. Daily News.

JAPAN'S REPORTED DESIRE FOR FRESH "RIGHTS.

[Special Pacific Service to the Telegraph-flouter]
Peking, Received March 4. The Pelting Gazette states that Japan is pressing for Iwo concessions for a railway across Fakien, Kiangai and Hanan to the Canton-Hankow Railway, and for official recognition of the Sino-Japanese Industrial Development Corporation which was originated by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, with special and far-reaching railway, mining and industrial rights throughout Chină. :
THE HANYEHPING, LOAN.
AGREEMENT TO HAVE NO EFFECT.
Peking, Received March 3,
The Ministry of Agriculture acknowledges the receipt of a petition from Sbong Heun-buai and other members of the Ennyebping Board. In reply the ministry declares that the recent Loan agreement shall have no effect and that it will issue farther instructions when the Ministries of Agriculture and Finance decide what measures are to be
taken!
Japan's Interest.
The Peking Gazette in a leader on the. Hanyelping Loan points out that it was agreed that the 1898 loan be repaid in ore on the basis of three yen per ton. Further loans have since been contracted on the same conditions with the result that Tayeb mines are exporting large quan- tities of ore to Japan annually. This will apparently con- tipue indefinitely unless the Japanese creditore can be paid off. The Peking Gazette Bags:
"How can Hanyang ever be made to pay when the Japanese have the right to share the Company's iron ore at less than market rate? When it is remembered that the total output of iron ore in Japan is less than 140,000 tons while the Tayel mines in 1911-12 produced 359,367 tons, the anxiety of the Japanese to secure control is readily understandable.”
Peking, Received March, 4.
It is understood that the full fifteen millions of the Hanyobping Lion was paid over last Decembar, thus pre- sumably rendering the Ministry of Agriculture's refusal to recognise the contract abortive.
