It is been well established within the past few years that radium, when applied in time, is a cure for superficial cancer, while in some quarters the view is held that there is no reason to doubt its effectiveness as Boure for internal cancer, provided a large amount of the mineral is brought into use. However that may be, there can be no denying the fact that it has very wonderful we went to press. properties and is of the utmost value to medical men, and, there are good grounds for believing that a tithe of itu virtues have not yet been discovered. At the present time treatment by radiam is a privilege that only the richer classes can participate in, and for that reason the plan of the authorities in America to place the radium mines of the country under direct Governmental control and to operate them, not for gain, but for the benefit of humanity, is a most praiseworthy cone. That some such step was needed seems amply proved by the fact that nearly half of the American supply of extracted radium is being used on one rich Congressman who is suffering from oicer, and whose money enables him to secure such a supply of the precious material. It appears, however, that Government conservation is only part of the programme contemplated. The real principle, says one of the New York papers, ie, by the creation of an insistent demand, to induce such appropriate action, public and private, that enough radium will be extracted from ores now known to exist to treat every case of cancer which may be benefited by the action of the radium rays. Thus it is hoped that whereas at present radium is scarce and extremely costly, in a few years there will bo radium depots all over the country available for all..
It is a good sign that the authorities have perceived the need for quick action, for with the great demand which is likely to be forthcoming for radium in the future, there were good reasons to foar that the lands would become the basis of private spoculation. Hitherto the world has not known the full value of the wonderful substance, simply because of the small amor at of the mineral available, which has meant that it has not been used to any great extent in experiments owing to the necessity for it in cases where a cure is known to be possible. It is a wise and noble plan which the United States Government has in mind, and one which, if carried out, should place within the reach of the hospitals scattered up and down the country the maximum amount of this marvellous healing gabatanos.
