Messrs. Win. Gray & Co, West Hartlepool, for F. O. Strick & Co Limited, London, has been sold to the British India Steam Na-

vigation Company. An 8,000 ton steamer has also been sold by Messrs. Strick to the British In- dia Company.

Not Sufficient Mates.

It is stated from Washington that fines aggregating. G. $5,000 against owners of vessels have recently been imposed by the Department of Commerce, because the ships were not carrying the required number of motos. Tho penalty in each instance was $100, although the law allows & maximum of $500. In all, 48 vessels at New York, Philadal- phia, Boston, Providence, Norfolk, Galveston, Savannah, Port Arthur and Portland (Mo.) were fired.

No Chinese occean-going steamers were entered, the number of river. steamere being 27 with a tonnage of 42,282 tons.
