It is reported tast the Ham- burg-American Steamship Com- pany has asked for bide in Ameri- can shipyards for the construc sion of four or six first-class cargo tond passenger steamers, each to be 400ft. long and 11,000 tona displacement, with accommoda- tion for 250-aloon passengers. The building of chips in the United States for a German com- pany is regarded as extremely -ignificant, and can only mean that the Hamburg-American Line, with their usual perspicacity," intend to have in their service ships of American construction ready so that, if the occasion should arise, they will be pre- pared to place them under the American flag for ues in the coastwise traffic through the Panama Canal, or fulfil Boy re- quirements that may be enacted by Congress to favour American shipping using that route.
