OPIUM DENS.
Palatial Rooms In East End of
London.
In one of those dismal streets. which intersect the two main highways in Limehouse and within a stone's throw of each other are two houses which have recently been opened for the use of victims of the opium habit, writes a correspondent of a Lon- don paper. They are rented by Chinese, and "run" by Chinees men who, as day succcada day, add to the already considerable fortude they have amassed from their drugstricken and helpless patrons. These dons have been called into being by the amazing increase in the number of those who seek oblivion and ultimate rain in the use of opiates.
10
The proprietors run other oplum dens, but these mor mognificent in their appointments and more luxurious in their mur- roundinge have been made pos sible by the growing number of well-to-do men who have given way to the deadly, and at one time almost exclusively Oriental, vice.

did not, it is veritably a portal of the still more silent grave.
No one need move from his couch. The opiam is cooked for each patron, who merely has to inhale the smoke, which brings fastidious visions and hideous nightmares. One habitus pat it thus: "Paradise and hell."
All the frequenters of the place are well dressed. Many, indeed, wear evening clothes. Few come in the daytime. Nor do the Owners of these dens encourage day trade Their sole object is gain, and notoriety will destroy their unholy business.
