It appears that the searchers, who had just . ascended from searching the cost bunkers, proceeded to rummage among the private effects of the crew and, in the course of their search, plunged their grimy hands among the silken go- sahoro" clothes of the sailors This was resented by the crew and a quartel ensued during which one or two of the native searchers were somewhat roughly handled with the result that & CO. seven of the crew were arrested and charged before the Mixed Court on the following day, one being fined $10 and the re mainder $2 each."Shipping | and Engineering."

The Calcutta Rate Ward The shipping competition on the Indian route is still being carried on between the British India Steamship Co. and the Nip pon Yuson Kaisha, though no change has been introduced in the rate of freightage by either party, reports the Japan Times." The competition, however, is gradual- ly subsiding owing to the change in the attitude of the British con- corn, which is apparently going to abandon the competition in view of the inadvisability of maintain- ing sach keen rivalry. The ship- ment of Saigon and Rangoon rice having come to a close for the. Basson, the British concern has recently reduced the number of the steamers on, the line and placed six liners, hitherto run on the line, in the service of other lines. At present ten British linera are running on the line against six of the N.Y.K. liners. The shipping business this year is in an unusually prosperous con- dition the world over. Under the circumstances a scarcity of vessels is keenly felt in all directions and it was considered very useless sud inadvisable to concentrate so many liners on the same route for, the purposes of maintaining such an excessive and unremunerative competition. In these circumstances the Nippon Yasen Kaisha intends to relinquish the heated rivalry and not to attempt to trespass on the interests of the rival concern should the British concern abandon its hostile at titude, though the rate of freight⠀⠀ age is still maintained as low as one-fourth of the former rate.
