SOME FEATURES OF SERVICE.
Lengthened Liners. -On-Out, 10-the-twin-screw steamship Marathon took her place again in the Aberdeen Line's service from London to Australia, via the Cape. She is not quite the same ship aa heretofore, for she has been out
of commission for some little time past, having been sent up to the Clyde to be lengthened by 50ft. There must be some substantial advantage to be gained by sub- mitting the vessel to this process, involving as it does the idleness of the capital locked up in her, and considerable payment to the shipbuildors. But the owners are taking the long view of the matter. Thoy quite reasonably expect that the gain in cargo and passenger-carrying capacity will be such that the cost of the alterations will prove relatively unimportant. A substantial ad- dition to the vessel's revenue- earning ability will, it is anticis pated, be achieved practically without loss of speed or additional coal consumption. One of the CASDA of ship most notabla lengthening was that of the Scot, which had a. fino record for
the fast steaming in South African mail service. She I was out in two, as the Marathon has been, and a new section ia- troduced into lor. Under the name of the Oceans the Scot is still in active service, being en- gaged in running regularly be- tween New York and Bermuda. Since she was lengthened there have been a number of examples of similar work, but the striking fat in the prazent instance is that the Aberdeen Line are sub- mitting two vessels to the pro- cess. In addition to the Marathon, the Miltiades is also to be made into a bigger ship. She will not. sail from London again till Deo, 5-Exchange.
The Form of Ships,
There is a natural disposition among engineers to dent, so far as possible, with flat surfaces for platos, and with round sections for rode, and upon the general grounds of economy in constrnice" tion the practice is, as a rule, fully justified. The evolution of the steamship has afforded ample testimony of what can be done in this direction, and cargo vessels have already progressed far in the direction of taking the shape. of rectangular boxes with vortical sides. It is instructive to recall the. variety of forms and the imposing lines of ships of the ancient and middle periods, and to inquire what were the advantages or drawbacks of the curves and. bulges, for it is cortain that they were not entirely the outcome of caprice and aesthetic taste. correspondent to the "Times" draws attention to the advantages which are claimed for a reversion to the bulged sides, carried
