THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH FRIDAY JANUARY 26 1912
COMMERCIAL,
Japanese Tea
Japanese tea is highly and widely appreciated in the Ameri- can market, where it is one of the rivals of Chinese green tes. In recent months the shortness of the Chinese supply caused a heavy demand for Japanese ten in America and, as a result, prices for Japanese teas rose re- markably, greatly favouring the importers there, and there was s rapid decrease in their stook.
a
According to estimates up to December 4, the Japanese imported in California amounted- to 24,380,000 lba, which waB, however, lately reported to have roached. 38,000,000.Iba., sxosed- ing largely the amount of your before last. The late prohibition of the production and exportation, of coloured tea both by the deslora and authorities is regarded as a doosssary and timely measure for the future of Japanese-ton in America. Consul Leo A. Bergliolz, in a recent report to the Department of Commerce and Labour, says that the tin mines in the province" of Yunnan, in China, supply from 4 to 5 per cont of the world's consumption of tin. The mines cover an immense siron oud have been operated by the Chinese for centuries. Daring the past decade there lms been an increase in production. A large part of the tin is exported, bal a considerable part is used by the Chinese in coining "token" money and in the manufacture of "silver joss," a paper which is largely burned by the Chinese during their religions ceremonies.
The process of refining the tin ore cannot be carried out to a very great degree by the rather crude native appliances at the mines, apy the tin slaba made by the native minera arð tliorefore sent to Hongkong, whers several worke aro ongiged in further reñaing the metal. Consul Borgholz Bays that the exports of re- fined tin from China in 1900 amounted to 9,053,177 ́pounds. Demand for Silver Coinage. A feature of the silver market which has not received full altention, remarks a London paper, has been the growing demand of different countries for the motal on coinage account. It .ssoms but a short time ago that most of the Continental countries wore afflicted with redundant stocks of silver coins, which woro A source of trouble to those who had created them. Through the development of basiness and the growing wealth of nations, these. stocks of coins have been drawn into circulation, and a growing demand for the white metal to renew the circulation from time to time is now experienced. Thus in 1908 China and India 'took from this country between them silver to the value of £8,556,000 during the eleven months ending November 30 in that year, against €1,818,000 despatoled to coun
