Mesara, Zorn & Leigh Hunt's Weekly Stock Exchange Report dated December 10, included the followingThe monstrous in- vention which gained currency in West End circles late on Thursday nights to the effect that King George had been assassinated in India was received with tho | utmost incredulity in the Stock Exchange, but, at the same time, it made its mark very evident upon prices all round the markets. The thero should be the. moro possibility of such a thing sont Yangizes u shock through the Stook Exchange and the buying movement that had been gather ing force was rent in a moment.. Friday morning's markets can sonroely be said to have marked time. They were signunt and depressed under the prevailing anxiety that lay like a log upon the nerves of the Stock Exchange as a whole, and not until the end of the day was there any harden- ing up in most of the markets.
The buying movement already referred to was the outcome of'n roturning confidence which made itself manifest in the gramer in- olination of the public, not only to buy for investment purposes, butalso to speculate in Home Rail- ways, Rubber slaves, Marconis, and some of the lesser-known for- eigh railway stocks. The settle- ment of the labour dispute in the raitway world, want a good way towards dissipating the un- Basiness felt with regard to the outlook for domestic securities, and in the Consul market a rise in the funds was nsoribed reason- ably quough to the softlement of the railway difficulties. The assassination rumour, however, had the effect of damping saimn tion, and here, as elsewhery, prices to give way.
Who is responsible for such fabrications it is, always im- possible to say. It would seem, however, that the moro eruel the rumour : the more difficult it in evon to make guosses at tho Bourge of its origin. Unfortunate- ly, the effect of such an incident. very ofton is that prices fail to recover the full extent of their losies when the lie has been en- phatically contradicted.

In spite of the occasional'shocks, such, for example, as rundors of coal strike, which disturb the 1onour of the bulls' lives, a careful survey, of the position shows that Home Railways are intrinsically undervalue. The long period of uncertainty depressed prices to a lovel which discounted the greater) part of the feared upheaval, and from this there has been a com- paratively insignficant revival, The Board of Trade returns prove the flúrishing condition of the nation+)-commerce; trallies con- tinue to expand in the ease of all the leading lines strike losses have been moro than recovàred; .working agreements,
which are doing so much to roluca : expenses, are now baginning to have their effect, while it will probably be found possible to meet the enlarged wage-billa by the promised permission to inorense rates. The presentyielde ranging in several cases to well over 5 per cent., must therefore entico many genuine-investors into this market-from which⠀⠀ Weismann, Lid.^-
they have been ab ont ro long-if such conditions are to be per- manent. Of this, of course, it is hardly possible to speak with cor- tainty, but the conservative policy lately pursued by the boards, and the generally improv-ed out- look, point to the mainten ancé, if not the increase, of dividends.
