A Town Effaced. The Washington correspon- dent of the "Times," telegraphing fon Oct, 1 said:--|

The town of Austin in Northern Pennsylvania was destroyed by flood and fire yesterday. A sixth, possibly a third, of its population of 3,000 is said to have perished.

This caught the waters of the Free- msn River, which formed into a large lake and supplied power for the Bayless Pulp Paper Com- pany. The dam began to leak n month after its completion. There was a panic in the town, but the warning apparently went unheed-
