Mullen was examining the vessel DEAE TRAMWAYS CO.
through his glasses when he ob-
served a commotion on the freight- or's forward deck. From a strug- gling mass of sailors, a man was seen hoisted over the bulwarke by three others, with a rope attached to his nook.
The figure was lowered to with- in a few feet of the water and then the rope was broken, or out. Beyond a splash- and a few ripples nothing fur- ther disturbed the surface of the water after the cutting of the rope, which allowed the man to disap- pear in the sea. During the occur- .rence, Captain McMullen says he saw an officer pacing the afterdock of the big ateamor, who, strangely enough, through the whole pro- ceedings, paid no attention to the melee at the bow.
