THE RED (DBEROSE OF CHINA,

In regard to the allegation, published in the United States some time slace, that the Chic- | exe florists of Tientsin grow tuberoses of a red colour, and perhaps of other shaden, Cansul" General Samuel S. Koabenshua makes the fol lowing report:

Some time since, this Conaniate received" a letter from a florist in the United States, enclos ing a sum of money, with the request that be be furnished''with his value in red toborosa bulby. He stated that he had been informad by a gentleman who baf travelled in China that he had seen red tuberoses grown by native forist in Tiental,

Inquiry was made of a German' ftorist here, a resident for many years, who stated that there is no natural sed tuberoso, but that the floweri are anificially colored. As the tuberose of the o dinary white variety is near flowering, the flower stalks and cut off close to the ground and ere placed in water la which is dissolved a red carb of whors composition he is ignorant. The coloring matter is drawn up into the flowers, tinting thera rad-the first that appear very slightly tinged, buite color becoming more pro- nounced in those which open later. He also stated that the red color can be produced la this way by using aniline colors, not only red, but any other aniline color which may be do sired. Native gardeners, however, Inilsted that natural red tuberoses were grown, but de- clined to sali balbs of the alleged red variety 150 with a guarantee that the balls would produce red Bowers, the payment to be withheld natij the bulbs, ware tested,”
