THE DRY DOCK" DEWBYZ
BUNK IN DEEF WATER.
The dry dock Daway sank in seventy feat of water at Olongapo at to o'clock yesterday morning, reports the Goblenews-American, of a5th May. The cause of her sinking is un.. koown but it is supposed that the valves on one side were left open dither accidentally by opened by some disgruntled ex-employee.
one of the workmen or were intentionally
what to a buoy and was being loaded with The Dewey was anchored alongside the coal for her engines when she suddenly began
to slok. She went down so fast that the work- men barely had time to escape from her, but As far as could be learned no one was injured, The lower end of the dock sonk until it touched the bottom of the bay and left about seven feet of the western side sticking up out of the Water.
There are 74 water tight compartments in the Dewey with 18 valves on, either side and it is thought some ose intentionally unscrewed the valves on one side or did it through careless- Dess because the armour plate was completely intact. These valves are constructed so that when they are opened on both sides the dock will sink sufficiently to allow the ships to float to upon her but when opened on cos side only make her a 'dead weight. Her engines and thought by naval experts that the docklug boilers are completely under water and, it i machinery, engines and her centrifugal pumpi will be ruined by the salt water...
The commandant of the Navy yard at Osvite bas ordered Naval Constructor L. S. Adams to investigate the sinking of the Dowcy and make an official report of the affair. Commander Adams left-Cavite yesterday afternoon with a corps of divers to follow out the instructions of the commandant.
26th May.
According to the latest advices from Olongapo the drydock Daway fa'still winking and there is a possibility that she will sink entirely, out of sight before means can be devised for raising her. Early Tuesday morning after the sank, one end of the huge dock could be seen above the water, but yesterday morning she had sunk five lost moro and naval men fear that sho might coations to sink into deep water which
F. BLACKHEAD & Co., will render her more dificult to float.

ject to rent.. CONFLICT OF OPINION,
The opinion of some of the naval experts who are familiar with the machinery of the big dock differs cupsiderably as to the probable cause of the accident. One theory is that the pipa between themiddle and end sections, which contains a valve, may have broken. This would food one of the big compartmoots and the dock, being sé feet under water in prepara tion for the docking of the destroyers on ibo following day, could have, boon, sunk in that way...
Another theory was that the six 24-inch valves ware left open which flooded the savaral bulkheads practically simultaneously, Ansibar probable cause was the fact that the dock ba ing lowered in order to allow her to to coaled, the valves were opened and may not have boon absolutely light when closed. This would havs permitted the water to trickle into the compartments and fill them with water. How ever, this is not believed to be the case by those who were working on the dock as it is said the valves are operated from the top deck and had anything happened to prevent their closing it would have been- dalected on the indicator.
Captain Albert Ments; commandant of the Davy yard at Cavite and alas of this station during the absence of Rear Admiral Hubbard; slated in ap interview yesterday that absolutely nothing is known as to what caused the Dewey to go dowe and nothing could be known until the completion of the investigation which is, now going on, A board of loquity has been appointed to investigate the matter mod to place the responsibility for the accident but this can not be done until the divers have deter. mined the cause. ・
The drydock Dowey cost the government $700,000 (gold) and the expense of getting her hero via the Suez amanated to $300,000.
EXPENSE OF REVLOATING." "Thers is only one way to float the Dowey" said a high naval official yesterday to a Cable, Dewa-American representative, “and that is to
