-INTERESTING HISTORICAL,

RETROSPECT.

To-day that worthy institution known as thu Italian Corvant, which has for half a century prominantly identified ass!! with good work in The Cology, especially in the direction of femals education, celebrates its Golden Jubi Jon and therefore some interesting facts concerning the history of the Convent will be appreciated..

The Convent owes its foundation in 1808.to the Venerable Foundress of the Institution of the Chunszian, Sisters of Charity-Magdalous, the Marchioness, of Canones, in Italy. The Masher-hou e was established at Verona and the Novitiate for Foreign Missions at Pavia.Oo February 14th, 1860, in answer taan appeal from Hongkong four Sisters taft Paria for Chinn, On their way, two mote Sisters joined them at Venice, so. "that what may ɓtly, be termed the planeer band consisted of six Sisters who arrived at Hongkong on the 12th April, 1850, with Sister Lucia Cupis as first Superiors. Of the six Sisters who first landed in the Colony, five died at various da'es in Chips. The sur viving member of the Sisterhood is Rev. Mother Stella, bols at the present time in the Hongkong Courout, The Sisters had no 1000er arrived ' the Colony, than they set to work in real samment with a view to fulfilling the sable obli gations which they had va watasily undertaken to carry out. They opened a day-school and foundling house within the first month of their arrival in premises on Cains Rosi not far from the present building, hiss Fm ly Bowring daughter of Sir Jabo Borlag, the Governor of Hongkong, (834.59) entered the Convent on the 28th April, 1860,, and later became a Sister She died in 1874, ten years later.

At the and of the first year, there were in the Convent 7 Bsters, So diy-scholars, 4 boarders and orphans. The first Chinnis Siver took the veil la 1861. That lady is still aliva, as well ss the first two Chinese orphan girls who were received in the Couvent. Five Sisters left for Hupe, North Coina, on the 16th July, 1868, and fouaded the pieseat Convent there at the request of Monsignor. Zinolli, the then Vicar Apostolic of Hupeb. The first braach was opened at Hoogkong in the Wanchai district id 1869 under the same qf. St. Francis' School, with a small hospital and refuge adjoining it. The modest premises have been since considerably enlarged. Mother Lecia Cupis, First Superioress, died pi Hong kong on the 10th October, 1869.

The Shanghai Times of 7th lost, says -The golf-champlonship of China, Hongkong sud Japan wat played on the Race Coune yester day, and much intèrcit was taken in the event. About a dozen players both from Shanghai and Hongkong, competed, but unfortunately the conditions left a great deal to be desired. Too links had not completely recovered from the very bad soaking they have received of late, and the consequence was that the greens werd extrenioly treacherous, patches being quite sodden while at other places they wore much keener. In addition å strong wind from the northeast blew over the course, and it was not therefore surprising that play was not of the very highest class. To the morning one couple

only started, and as four ronoda bad ta be played it is impossible this avaning to give the result.

է:

Longmuir commenced play in the morning with J. B. Ferrier, but his first round was very poor. He bad only a couple of 4'e while the eighth bole cost him 7, his total for the round being 48. Against this Farrier pot up 43, taking 4's and g's all the way round except at the last hole, which cost 6. la this second round Longmuir started to play up to form, and holing out first in 3, secured a 39. Ferriar made a mess of the first hole, taking 7, which considering that he usually manages to get down in 3 in surprising, Thereafter be played consistent, goil until the last hole, where he required 7, his total being 45. In the afternoon Longmuir started off with a 40, und was wonderfully steady, bis only fault being that on several occasions he missed short puts, lipping the bale opaco or twice. At the sixth green bo bad the hardest of luck. A long drive into the teeth of the wind over the croi k, and be pitched beautifäily, straight for the fig. The greens are in ibe meantime reped off, and his ball struck one of the bamboo poles and 1ebsunded back. He would surely have had a three here but for this miitortuve, and as it ws.through excellent putting be found the duc in 4. Ferrier at this hale found himself very badly in difficulter ropp ng his drive be struck the fence guarding the creek and rebounded to the pathway. His sacood just touched the top of the fence, and jumped into the creek, so that he had to play his fourth shot to get over, the hole taking him & Longmair took 43 for his fourth round and Ferrier 41.
