The use of the drug originated in the province of Selangor, Federated. Malay Stales, where the plant grows freely; the leaves and twigs are prepared for use by roasting on an iron piste over a charcoal fire. In's paper published in the Pharmaceutical Journal for January 1Bib, 190°, an account is given of a preliminary investigation of the fresh and roasted drug by Mr. E. E. Harrison, who found both to contain a resin or resins, tannin and phlobaphene (a derivative of tuonio); nika- folds were proved to be abrest, and no appte clable amount of any glucoside was found, though light indications were obtained of the presence of a glucosidel substance in very small quantity. A decoction of the drug, prepared in the manner recommended in Selangor, con. 'tained only traces of the resin, as was to be expected, and its principal, constituest ap. pears to have been tannin.
