RATTAN-MANUFACTURE.
INDUSTRY.
THREATENED RIVALRY IN THỂ
HILIPPINES.
A letler has recently been received by the bureau of lorestry which may foretell the establishment of a new and important indus try for the Philippine Islands; or rather, the commercial application of an industry which has existed in a small way from the very earliest times. This has to do with the machine manufacture of rattan for furniture and various other commercial uses. The letter comes from a group of business men in Los Angeles, who state that, if conditions are 'favourable, they expect to ship a full supply of modem machinery to Manila, and lake up. 'zatian-manufacture on a large scale, exporting the fiuished product to all parts of the civilized,
world.
At present, Singapore, and Hongkong are the principal seats of ratian furniture manufac tura; but there is no reason whatever why Manila and other Philippine cities with their labour conditions and supplies of raw material, should not obtain a considerable share of this profi:able industry., in fact, an agent of the bareas of forestry recently sent to study the lumber markets, recommended that teachers in the industrial schools of the Philippines be Taught the art of rattan: furniture making, so "that they in lurs could teach their pupils. That the prospective investors will find bere all that they need almost goes without saying, for ration of excellent quality is found in large -quantities in almost all of the Philippine. forests. In his reply to the letter from Cali- foroia, Major Abern, director of the bureau of forestry, says in part:
*Rattan, as it is called in the United States, is known in the Far East as Bejuco, and it is ods of the principal minor forest products of the Philippines. It consists of plants with long climbing stems. They belong to the Falm family and may properly be called climbing palms, They grow in a great pro fasion of kinds and quantities in all virgin forests of the Philippines. The hill and moun. tain regions produce the best graden, while those upon the flats are larger, courser and nat so tough. Several kinds are found, some of which are di little value.

Saigon to this-There was a temporary firmaess to this direction during the fortnight under review, and it was generally, anticipated that this trade would broaden 'out, but this has

The local rice market the furber improved, and freights gradually worked their way up to 18 cents, a single fixture only, which is the top rate so far paid this season. Later on charterers were not willing to pay more than 17 cents, and realizing the impossibility to secure "small-sized" vessela at this figure, larger quantities were offered, and led to the fixtures of two 45/50,000 piculs boats at that rate. In addition there was the very numerous Marina Medical Service, com- prising the medical officers of the lodiamen; but these were only appointed to particular ships for single voyages. The St. Heleoa Service was abolished when the island was ceded to the Crown in 1833. The last officer to cuter this service was murdered by pirates in 1830, and the last survivor died in 1883 The West Coast of Sumatra Service supplied the first factories which the Company erected in the East, on the Malay Islands, and it came to an end in 1835 when the British por sessions in Sumatra were ceded to the Dusch, in exchange for Malacca. Referring to the Prince of Wales Island Service, Dr. Crawford recalls the fact that in 18 it was proposed to form a fourth Presidency to include the Com- pany's possessions in Further India with the seat of Government at Penang. The scheme was never carried out, and the Medical Service was recruited chiefly from Bengal until 1867, when the Straits Settlements were removed from the control of the Iqdian Government and incorporated into a Crown Colony. The China Medical Service was the smallest of all, con sisting of two men who served in the Com- pany's factories at Cabion and Macao. It came to an end in 1843 when the Company's trading operations ceased and the factories were closed.
