Reports teached Shanghai on the rath inst. to the fact that there was a recurrence of the rioiing by a section of the Chinese troops stalloned at Soochow, on Sunday. Inquiries mads of foreigners who were in the city on Sunday showed that there was some difficulty in obtaining conveyances in the vicinity that there, were persistent remours of 'rinting and <that's Japanese reported to have baan stabbed by a soldier. Other foreigners who were at Soochow did not hear of any trouble.
The disturbance on Friday originated in the milltary camp, where about three thousand foreign-drified troops of the Second Division are stationed. It appears that the Comman- der-in-Chial of the troops issued an order pro hibiting gambling in the camp on New Year's. --Day.” This, order was rosapted by the troops and some of the soldiers wont so, far as to dis obey it openly. Au axample had to be made and the lugleader was ordered to receive forty „blows with 'a'bamboo, and the sentence was promptly carried out. This enraged bis com. rades, and the feeling among the troops was such that the Commander-in-chief of the First! and Second Divisious stopped all leave. The result of this was that on Friday some forty of the men of the Second Division scaled the walls of the barracks and set out to create a disturbance, with a view to getting thair officers into trouble with the higher authorities, Close to the camp the soldiers came upon a Зараделе show and they immediately de manded free admission, as their right. This demand was granted, so we ste informed, but when the party got inside. they began to creats a disturbance and the cry of "Ta" (beat) was raised. The soldiers thereupon began to attack the Japanese showmen, whom they put to fight and cbased, to a well-stocked Japanese chemist shop. An attack on the shop followed, and to a short "space of time the plate glass windows bad been shalterad and everything breakable smashed to pieces. The soldiers discovered a quantity of Japanese daggers in the shop and these they seized. The Chipeto police made no attempt to Interfore, and there were no military pickets out, as it is the custom to withdraw them during the first and second days of the New Year.
