Mbile it was not the province of the Chamber of Commerce to push the in. terests of any individual business concern, it appeared that they should no longer be den pendeat up in his Majesty's Navy for their wireless statins, but that one should be erected independently of th÷N¬vy-Ja-nïder-toʻmika- this thoroughly effisien and self-supporting. it should be conducted as a commercial undertaking and not as a Govern nient_can- cern, but of course, the usual conditions would have in be, inposed in préservo sovereign rights and ebayol to time of war. To shipping the erection of such a station is of the greatest moment, and its value would in crease month by month, not to a year by year. In 1917, the latest figures to hand, the tou nage of British and fneign vessels entered at Victoria, Hongkong was y40,700 tons, compared with 11,194,073 1005 at Londo. The anomaly of Hongkong, not having a com-java-Bank T.T. mercial system of wireless telegraphy is too apparent to need emphasis la October last Mesar. Keegan and Rosencrantz, who have the sole right to deal in and use in the Far East the wireless equipment of the United Wireless Telegraph Co., solicited the faterest of the Hongkong Chamlier al Commerce lo their application to the Government fora licence giving them the sole right to conduct a wireless telegraphy.station in Hongkong for twenty-five years Naturally the Chamber does not-wish to support the application of any particular Company, but it sees the imperative seed of the Government either consenting to a com- mercial company setting up a station or es- tablishing one itself. The usefulness of the station at Shanghai is demonstrated daily; in December, 1955. a second British cruiser was called to this port in an emergency by the man-of-war lying off the Bund. We do not need to go for afield to motiply instances of ile utility of wireless telegraphy, and Mr. Craddock was not exaggorming in importance when he said that an important monport cannot be said to be properly equipped, If the means for dealing with wireless messages are absent. Last year over one hundred ships| of the British mercantile marine wera equipped
·with wireless' apparatus, and other nations bave certainly, not been s! w to install systems
