ADVICE BY BRITISH CONSUL
In his Report on the Trade of the Consular

t
"Inquiries are frequently received from British subjects in various parts of the Empire ay to the ponibility of obtaining employment in this connury. Ludien ask for positions us govarnassei, typists, teachers, &'c., while men'i requests vary from clerical work to ami-techni cal employment on sailways, docks, &c. It may be said at once that positions - obtainable by casual applicants are few and far be ́tween, and when obtained are oltéo not very desirable. Amongst japanese departments, firms and families the great differences of language, clothing, mede of living, &c, make the employment of foreigbern naturally a mát- \ter di difficulty; nol'to mention the fact that soch foreigners cannot live on the same tow rates of remuneration that Japanese can. More. ever, positions which do exist, such as teachers of English in -bays' sod girls' 'schools, are few and generally filed by channels not open to the casual applicant There are, it is true); namerons British and other foreign firms es... tablished in Japan employing large staffs of their own nationality. Many of these British firms, however, have offices in Looden and alsewhere and naturally recruit their employés from such home offices, while positions which do occur locally would be generally filled by sons and other relatives of local British- resid- ants." But positions here, in many cases have disadvantages... A position as a teacher, for ́Instance, might involve a residence in the In- thelor where. Igaorance of the language and customs and the difference of national babies tavalve more or less discomfort........... Moreover, 11.)

WORK IN SOUTHERN HUNAN,
Under date, Chenchow, goth ult, the respondent of the N. C. D. Nous writes
Your correspondent has recently made a trip overland from Chenchow to Pingshu to the bead waters of the North River and down the'} river to Csalon and Hongkong, Southern Hogan is supplying great quantities of sleepers for the new railroad. Great rafts are being sent down the river and as far inland as forty and filty these sleepers are being prepared and carried over to the river. It is a great wonder that only the commod, pino sleepers are used, for they decay very obaily and surm to be unfit. for the building of a good road bed,
North of Tauchoufa good quiriers have been built for the surveyors and officials of the road are at work grading and preparing culverts. and south of Taochoulu ip many places coolies
Trains rua now from Canton to Pachiangku about fifty miles and the run in made in two hours and forty-five minutes. By taking this railroad from Canton to Puchiangku five or six days can be saved over taking house boats up
the river.
SINEWS OF WAR.
In fludan the taxes are being increased to raise money for the railroad. For every taal of taxes one dollar is added and this extra money is to be laid and: for five years for the building of Hunan's share of the road. To some quarters there is a good deal of opposition and at Kiaho there was considerable agitation against paying this extra tax.

WHAT OF THE FUTURE?
There is also much speculation as to whan trains will be running into Hunan. It is re- ported that the bridge across the West branch of the river at Taocboufa will take five years to complete; but farries could be used for time at least. Some say that in two years the road will be built into Hanaó, others say longer, Looking at it from this end, the old prophecy of taking two hundred years to tom. plete the road seems to be an exaggeration.

THE YEAR'S RESULTS,
Referring to the trade of Osaka, with China for the year as closed, the Oaska Mainichi remarks that owing to the low price of silver and the trade depression in China, the trade of Japan with China for the year under review was very anfavourable between January and August, but subaequantly the condition oftrade gradually im- proved, the silver market rose to above 240, and the decrease seen in the first half was balanced at the end of the year.
