SILVER

The fluctuations of silver during this year have been rather small compared with the last eight years. The highest point was reached in May with 24 and the lowest in the beginning of March, and of October and beginning of November with 23 1/16. The year opened with 23 3-16, but speculative purchases for the Indian Bazaar and purchases by China as cover against export trade soon brought the rate ovor:24. It seems that holders of silver considered 14 and higher a good price and sold freely, thereby checking any further advance, Stocks, bought by speculators in India, were accumulating and holders had to carry their stock until conditions in India Improved to bring about larger pur chases for the baxars; supporting induet ces, however, were steady Continental purchases. In April the outlook for the Tudian exchange began to look brighter. "This, coupled with trade in China and speculation, brought silver up to 143 in May, but it slowly gave way again as the demand for silver could not keep pace with the supplies from the United States and Unnada The exceptionally good crop in Indis, especially.cotton, and the rise in the price of cotton has been a great factor in reducing the enormous stocks held by the Bazaar. In October a very good export business ret in in North China and heavy, purchases for the Continent during November and Dec. ember helped the" price slowly, up. america stopped selling freely and adveino trade condi tions in China (import business is do a very moderate scale) helped further to strengthen silver, "which stands quoted" at the close at 241....
