Ambon is a mixture of Portuguese and Dutch blord with, of confié, the ubiquiten Chinese dolpg most of the buylög and selling. - Cloves are the chief article of export, the trees being of a pinkish hue, which are easily discerned amidst the prevalling green. Walking, vo- fortunately, is the only means of locomotion at Ambon, but the town being small everything worth seeing is soon accomplished.
A walk round, the Esplanade, a delightful spot in the evening, a look in at the market, a study of the qualot old Dutch houses, a visit to the native stores ending up with stenghas or pabits at the Club or Soselisa Hotel and you, can say "I have done Ambon."
Yourly maxed the steamer bera as clocks ashore ware miles behind the ship's time and the captain sent the chief officer in search of me. That gentleman found me discassing the. best way to reform the nativos with a Dutch parson at the Spselisa. It is needless to add the discussion, was abruptly closed. if you have the time at Ambon you can hire à boat and go to the Sea Gardens, where on a clear day you diecera is the ocean depths all kinds of different coloured coral, anemones, rainbow fish and other marine delights.

If a student of finisce follows the figures coplained in the report right through, he will see that the Government and its advisers in this direction have adopted and adhered to a policy which makes for safety. There is little else to be said about the present budget. Most people in the Far East would seem to have their own views upon the question of exchange, precisely as it suits their own convenience, but it must be conceded by all that the ministry of finance has done all possible that in concomit nt with stability and existing circumstances, Siam; having adopted the gold standard, nata. rally had to put up with certain inconveniences. if not actual losses, at the outset, but it must be remembered that these are but temporary matters and that they will result in eventually placing this country upon the Baals we ali deske it to be upon.
