OPIUM IN CANTON, VONA

In the House of Commons, on October 19¢ [ist? Mr. Laidlaw, asked the Secretary of State for

Foreign Affaire if a representation was tiedai by His Majesty's Consul-Gaveral at Canton to the Chinese authorities for the rulenus of a Chinese opium merchant, imprisoned la com- nection with the oplum regulations; if so, at whose request; what was the result; and, did, his action bare the approval, of the Foreign Offca.

Sir E. Grey: I have received a raport stating that a representation was made by the Acting British Coastil-General at Canto, pointing out that the arrest and imprisonment of a Canton dealer of the wholesale trade by the Gplam Bursen contravened the assurance given by the Chinese Government that the regulations would not interfere with the opisma trade. The Contents Fostul General would appear to have acted on bis own initiative.. I am not yet aware of the result of these representations. The action of the Acting Consul-General at Canton has the approval of the Foreign Office. It does not impir any modification of the attitude of His Majesty's Government with regard to the gestive réduction of the import of opium.

making a net efflux for the week of £1,048,000. Silver. Despite the large stocks in Bombay, the purchases of silver for that quarter have been continued to some extent. These are oc

casioned, not only by the effect of the good

monsroo, but also by the fact that this year the demand for jewellery in connexion with the wedding season is expected to consume a far larger amount of the white metal than last yout. It is believed that during the next few months the daily offtake is likely to be not less than

Ico bars.

F

As an indication of the extent to which India relies upon bor harvest, it is interesting to mole that even in a comparatively bad year, such as 1908/9, out of the total exporis of £to0,000,000, the produce of the land was responsible for no- less a sum than £73,000,000.

Since the second week is August no silver bas Advices from Chios are sol encouraging: been shipped to Hongkong or Shanghai direct from this market. Nevertheless, the, exchange frequently admits of forward purchases, the import of cotton goods being on such a smal scale that silver is the only satisfactory means of adjusting the balance of trade.

ito

If the price of cotton remains at present high level, it is quite likely that the delivery of the silver will be again post posed, and foutbor forward purchases taka plice. If, on the other hand, the price of cotton were to fail to such an extant da to in- duce Chinese merchants to buy piece-goods, a large quantity of silver would be thrown On this market. It is, therefore, very dificult to foresee the tone of the silver'market in the near future.

The prices, as for some weeks past, kavo shown. remarkable steadiness, with a variation of only jth of a pepay.

di

The shipment of £25,000 bar silver has bess made from San Francisco to the Far East.
